Overview

LightSpeed1000™ supports Bit Error Rate Testing over ATM and PoS OC-3 / STM-1 and OC-12 / STM-4 interfaces.

LightSpeed1000™ - BERT

ATM BERT

ATM Bit Error Rate Test (BERT) application permits BER testing over ATM layer, The application allows to configure ATM headers for UNI & NNI interfaces, to generate/detect Pseudo Random Bit Sequence (PRBS) patterns, and user-defined bit patterns. In addition, the application includes single bit error insertion, auto error insert rate from 10-1 to 10-9, invert and non-invert selections.

A variety of standard data patterns are available for test purposes.

PoS BERT

PoS BERT Bit Error Rate Test (BERT) run over IP over PPP payload area. The application allows to configure layer 3 IP parameters such as IPv4 headers, generates/detects Pseudo Random Bit Sequence (PRBS) patterns, and user-defined bit patterns. In addition the application includes single bit error insertion, error insert rate from 10-1 to 10-9, invert and non-invert selections and sequence number options.

Layer configuration

ATM Layer (in ATM BERT only)

ATM layer provides configuration of ATM header fields such as GFC (Generic Flow Control), VPI (Virtual Path Identifier), VCI (Virtual Channel Identifier), PT (Payload Type) , and CLP (Cell Loss Priority). ATM header fields for UNI will have GFC (Generic Flow Control) enabled, while for NNI interface GFC field is disabled.

Layer 3 - IPv4 Parameters (in PoS BERT only)

PoS BERT support IPv4 standard parameters such as Src / Dest IP Address, Type of Services (ToS)/Differentiated Service, Time To Live (TTL), Protocol, Header Checksum, Auto Checksum and Identification. Source and Destination IP addresses at Rx Config are used to match with the received packet's Source and Destination address. If they do not match, the packet is rejected as Non Test Packet.

Payload

Payload at the Tx configuration allows user to select specific Bit Error Rate test pattern for transmission. LightSpeed1000™ Analyzer support various BERT patterns; 29-1, 211-1, 215-1, 220-1, 223-1, 229-1, 231-1, all ones, all zeros, alternate 1s and 0s, and user-defined pattern.

While at Rx configuration these patterns are used to verify the incoming BERT pattern. Additionally, user definable pre-sync achieve, sync loss bits, and sync loss declare options can also be set. Pattern Sync is achieved only if BERT pattern matches.

Traffic Rate

The Traffic Rate for ATM BERT supports Bandwidth Rate defined in :

  • percent with range starting from 0.01 to 100% of current bandwidth
  • Cell Ratio, where users can set the amount of ATM traffic cells and idle cells

In case of PoS BERT, users can specify the Frame Length in bytes, ranging from 29 bytes to 1788 for normal frame sizes and the desired rate either in bandwidth percent of the link speed or in frames/sec (fps).

Impairments

ATM & PoS BERT allows users to insert single bit error or error rate from 10-1 to 10-9 into the outgoing (TX) BERT stream.

Results

The module displays the real-time BERT results in the Results pane. The Result screen displays both BERT Status and BERT Statistics such as count of No rx data, bits received, bit errors, bit error rate/seconds, sync loss count/seconds, error free seconds, and out-of-sequence bits (only in Pos). BERT Status provides a quick view of the BERT Test status in the form of Alarm LEDs.

Statistics

Tx Statistics displays Frame count and Byte count values. This is currently under development.

In ATM analyzer, Rx Statistics displays the count of total cells, idle cells, Bert test cells, filtered out cells, and HEC error frames.

In PoS analyzer, Rx Statistics displays count of Total frames, IPv4/IPv6/UDP frames, IP/TCP/UDP/ICMP/IGRP/Other data frames, IP/UDP checksum error frames, and Non IP/UDP test frames.
